DHR.  G.W. LOVINK (GEERT), INSTITUUT NETWERKCULTUUR

This was an off the record interview meaning it was not recorded. So I will be summarising what we spoke about and what I understood and will keep in mind while working on this project.

During our conversation we spoke about how the publishing world is at a standstill since 2015 with digital forms. He explained that we haven’t made progress with changing the way we view them, consume them and distribute them. All the technology to distribute books in a more ethical and fair way is already here, it’s just that big companies like Kindle ect. are limiting access so people have to choose them, have to stay in their ecosystem, their devices and apps.

He explained that ePub is becoming a dying form of digital book formatting, that is so easy anyone can make one. With HTML 5 taking over could make it harder for people to make digital books/formats themselves, thus making it easier for big companies to uphold the monopoly they have on digital publishing/ digital reading.

Shane, Journalist/ Writer

Right now I’m freelance writing articles for different companies mostly.

Yes, I read at least 2 books a month, usually, they are digital. I like reading digitally, saves space and costs less. Besides, I have an Ipad, so why not use it for that?

Sounds like a good idea, if it would work in this climate I can’t say. A lot of companies are built on making money because of those laws. But since music is heading that way. Maybe publishing will soon swing that way as well.

My concern with that is having to depend on people's kindness for donations to make it through. But hearing about your research makes it easier to grasp that people would be willing to do that.

We get together every month or so. We just started so we haven’t had any problems yet. But I think communication and having open discussions so everyone's opinion feels heard can be tough. But It’s mostly fun.
